Excel Journal or Trading Journal App?

Compare a spreadsheet workflow with an account-based journal, and understand what to check before importing tradebook files.

What a spreadsheet does well

A spreadsheet gives you direct control over columns, formatting and personal notes. It can be a useful starting point when you want to define your journal fields before committing to a workflow.

That control also makes consistency your responsibility. Keep date formats, timezones, quantity units and strategy names stable. Preserve source files and distinguish cells you typed manually from values calculated by a formula.

What an account-based journal adds

Trade Diary brings your recorded executions, strategy links, charge estimates, period filters and daily reviews into one workspace. Shared form settings can make repeated entries more consistent across sessions.

A journal app does not make an incorrect source file accurate. Review execution data before importing and reconcile financial figures with broker records. Calculated charges remain estimates unless separately confirmed.

Prepare an import carefully

The generic CSV/XLSX tradebook workflow lets you map available columns rather than assuming every broker uses the same export layout. Review execution date, symbol, side, quantity and price mappings, and confirm whether quantities are units or lots.

The preview should show validation issues, duplicates and sequences requiring review before records are saved. Re-uploading overlapping exports should not be used as a way to overwrite an existing manually corrected trade.

  • Keep the original broker export unchanged.
  • Review column mapping and normalized quantities.
  • Inspect duplicates and unmatched fills.
  • Confirm the preview before saving.

Protect notes when changing tools

A trading journal contains more than executions. Keep strategy, psychology, mistakes, notes and other annotations when moving between workflows. File import and official broker API synchronization are different features.

Choose a workflow you can maintain and review. Neither a spreadsheet nor an app guarantees better financial results; the useful outcome is an accurate and accessible record of your own trading process.
